Here’s a little secret: I’m collecting non-paying jobs.
Some people call that “volunteering,” but I consider it part of my slowly rolling, slowly growing snowball of work that will someday lead me to “author” status. (Fingers crossed!!)
My newest endeavor, which I’ve added to my stay-at-home mother, picture book writer, teacher helper, and SCBWI PA-West Event Coordinator roles, is speaking to classrooms about writing picture books and chasing dreams. I did a trial run with my second grader’s class, and I LOVED it!
I amped up the content and the professionalism (ie. my 10 year old helped me create a powerpoint presentation) and shared it with fourth graders. Again… I LOVED it. I want to do it more!
I loved watching the children nod along when I told them to believe in themselves. I loved their questions. I loved the shift from wanting to be a sports star to also wanting to be a writer. But my favorite part, after giving them time to write their own complete stories (with the help of a form I created), was seeing how proud and empowered they were when they share their creations with the room.
I may not be making any money (…yet…), but I’m definitely getting paid.
Shoot for the stars,
Kelly
