Halloweensie 2018

It’s that time of year – time for the Halloweensie Contest organized and run by the generous Susanna Leonard Hill!!!

Here’s how it works – to enter you must write a kid-friendly Halloween story in 100 words or less, and you must use the three words chosen by Susanna. This year the words are: shiver, cauldron, and howl.

For the full list of rules click here.

If you didn’t enter, I still encourage you to check out the entrants. They’re short, fun, and have never before been seen by human eyes! (Click here to read the other stories.)

Here is my entry:

WITCHES’ BREW

(99 words)

The witches convened

in a clearing each fall,

to conjure the trickiest

spell of them all.

They gathered up bats

and black cats

and an owl.

Then sprinkled in shivers

and shrieks

and a howl.

The cauldron grew bubbly,

all spicy and hot,

creating a vapor

that rose from the pot.

The witches fell silent.

Their pointy ears perked

each anxious to hear

if the witches’ brew worked.

Then over the clearing,

came rollicking noise.

Ding-dong.

“Trick or treat!”

sang the sweet girls and boys.

The witches, they cackled.

They’d done their job well,

successfully casting

The Halloween Spell.

  1. So dang spooky-cute! I love the spicy hot cauldron, the pointy ears, and the sweet girls and boys. Oh, and also the word “rollicking.” This story puts me in a Halloween mood!

  2. Ooh, I loved how the spell brought the trick-or-treaters. This was so much fun and magical! Also great rhyming and word choice, especially the fun things that went into the brew. Great job and best of luck!

  3. Great tension in your story arc (which is hard to do with such few words!) Good luck in the contest!

  4. Kelly,
Well done with your rhyming story! So whether the spell was to make Halloween happen or to make the trick-or-treaters come to their door, it worked! I can almost smell the vapor that came from the cauldron – nice image.

    Good luck with the contest!
