It’s that time of year – time for the Halloweensie Contest organized and run by the generous Susanna Leonard Hill!!!
Here’s how it works – to enter you must write a kid-friendly Halloween story in 100 words or less, and you must use the three words chosen by Susanna. This year the words are: shiver, cauldron, and howl.
For the full list of rules click here.
If you didn’t enter, I still encourage you to check out the entrants. They’re short, fun, and have never before been seen by human eyes! (Click here to read the other stories.)
Here is my entry:
The witches convened
in a clearing each fall,
to conjure the trickiest
spell of them all.
They gathered up bats
and black cats
and an owl.
Then sprinkled in shivers
and a howl.
The cauldron grew bubbly,
all spicy and hot,
creating a vapor
that rose from the pot.
The witches fell silent.
Their pointy ears perked
each anxious to hear
if the witches’ brew worked.
Then over the clearing,
came rollicking noise.
“Trick or treat!”
sang the sweet girls and boys.
The witches, they cackled.
They’d done their job well,
The Halloween Spell.
(Update: I came in 5th!)

Terrific rhyming tale, great job! Good luck and Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween to you!
I wonder what kind of Halloween spell the witches cast. An illustrator would have fun with this.
I imagine it is orange but I couldn’t find anything that rhymes with orange 😁
Oh man, I like this. Great witches
Oh man, thank you!
So dang spooky-cute! I love the spicy hot cauldron, the pointy ears, and the sweet girls and boys. Oh, and also the word “rollicking.” This story puts me in a Halloween mood!
Thanks so much, Heather! I’m lucky to have wonderful CP’s 😉
What a fun poem. Love “The Halloween spell.” Now if they could just get rid of the rain!
I know, right!? Maybe I’ll write a sequel 🙂
So fun luring in the kids on Halloween! Good luck!
Haha! Thanks, Nancy!

Ooh, I loved how the spell brought the trick-or-treaters. This was so much fun and magical! Also great rhyming and word choice, especially the fun things that went into the brew. Great job and best of luck!
Thank you, Debbie!
Your rhyme and meter are wonderful! I can see this story as a picture book. Good luck!
Thank you, Rose!
Fun poem. Smart witches too. 🙂 Good luck!
Hi Kelly. This was a bewitching read. I enjoyed it!
Haha! Thank you.
Great tension in your story arc (which is hard to do with such few words!) Good luck in the contest!
Well done with your rhyming story! So whether the spell was to make Halloween happen or to make the trick-or-treaters come to their door, it worked! I can almost smell the vapor that came from the cauldron – nice image.
Good luck with the contest!
