HALLOWEEN LITE – 2020 Fall Writing Frenzy

I love writing contests! I love prompts, and rules, and deadlines!

Here is my entry for the 2020 Fall Writing Frenzy brought to us by Lydia Lukidis and Kaitlyn Sanchez.  There are sure to be a ton of fun fall-themed stories, each 200 words or less. Check them out here!

HALLOWEEN LITE

Kelly Conroy

For kids who get frightened

on Halloween night,

we have a new option

called “Halloween Lite.”

No skeletons, mummies,

or witches with cats.

No dark haunted houses,

or cobwebs, or rats.

No nightmarish knickknacks

allowed on our shelves.

No need for a costume —

we’ll dress as ourselves.

No sinister music.

No ghosts yelling, “Boo!”

Instead, we’ll blow kisses

and say, “I love you.”

We’ll strip out the scary

and add in some sweet.

You don’t like this option?

Phew! Let’s Trick-or-Treat!

  1. OMG. Such a fun poem with great rhythm and feeling. You had me at “Halloween Lite.” And then you really had me going there, right up to: “We’ll strip out the scary/and add in some sweet.” Which you do to perfection with your last two lines! @AnneLipton

  2. What a great use of the photo! I selected the same one but went very, ah, dark! haha! I also like that you convinced me on another option and the reversed it! Nice job, Kelly!

  3. Wow- how cute, sweet and fun from a fairly scary photo. Good job. I was drawn to this photo but couldn’t think of a way to write a PB story to go along with it. 🙂

  4. This is a lot of fun and really clever – the twist at the end was super satisfying. Gives me a bit of a Shel Silverstein vibe – which is a high compliment 🙂 Good luck!

  5. Kelly this is great! I laughed from the first stanza to the last, and really liked the “Phew!”

    Good luck in the contest!
